Domestic Violence Supports
Family and domestic violence is an ongoing pattern of behaviours intended to coerce,
control, or create fear within a family or intimate relationship. This includes physical
abuse, stalking, financial, emotional, or psychological abuse, sexual violence or any other
behaviour which causes the victim to live in FEAR.
Causing Fear is any behaviour that is used to intimidate you, threatens to harm you,
causes you to be in danger, feel trapped and unsafe. Fear takes away your power,
controls what you can do and can’t do.
Coercive Control is a complex pattern of behaviours that undermine your self-confidence, and overtime destroys your sense of self.
Some common examples of coercive behaviour are:
-
Isolating you from friends and family
-
Depriving you of basic needs, such as food
-
Monitoring your time
-
Monitoring you via online communication tools or spyware
-
Taking control over aspects of your everyday life, such as where you can go, who you can see, what you can wear and when you can sleep.
-
Depriving you access to support services, such as medical services.
-
Repeatedly putting you down, such as saying you’re worthless, body shaming.
-
Humiliating, degrading, or dehumanising you.
-
Controlling your finances
-
Making threats or intimidating you

Court Processes
Before Court
If you have a domestic violence matter which is going to court and you want to know what will happen, the Mid Coast WDVCAS can provide you with information and referrals to other agencies and services for assistance. We will also let you know where we are located at the court so you can find them easily on the day.
At Court
We can be at court with you and offer a comfortable and safe place to wait away from the other person. We will keep you informed to help you understand what is happening, and work with you to get an order that is best for your situation. We can link you with free legal and other advice at court. We will keep you informed about the progress of your case, including any upcoming dates when you need to attend court.
After Court
We can offer referrals to other services that can help you with things such as safe housing, income support, children's needs, family law and counselling. We will provide you with information about how to keep yourself and your children safe, and what to do if the abuse or control continues.
If your ADVO matter is set down for a defended hearing, we can organise for you to attend a hearing clinic which helps explain what happens at court on the day of the hearing.
